UniCentre Band Comp Heat 4 Review
Tuesday 19th May 2009
Another great crowd turned out for Heat 4 of the 2009 UniCentre Band Competition, braving the wind and rain soaked conditions to enjoy what was another fine display from the seemingly endless pool of musical talent that UOW and the Wollongong region continues to produce. This only serves to highlight the fact that the Wollongong music scene is currently flourishing, with an endless array of quality bands and a dedicated group of fans, the local music scene is most certainly alive and well.
Kicking off proceedings at Heat 4 was the raw punk and hardcore sounds of OLD TIME GLORY. This was followed by a lively and sassy set from TOKYO SPARES and the humorous, yet musically sound stylings of SUITE NONCHALANT, which included a fantastic version of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’. Next up it was the huge sound of BANSHI that completely filled out the big UniBar stage, and finally came PAPER MOON a 3-piece with a distinct sound who wear their alt-country/rock influences proudly on their sleeve.
The panel of music industry judges decided that on this night it would be TOKYO SPARES that would be progressing through as wildcard and taking out 2nd place. This 3-piece’s sound was as big as ever, with the guitar playing and drumming tight and lead vocalist commanding the stage and pulling out her best Karen-O moves, TOKYO SPARES delivered big-time and showed just how far they have come as a band, and will certainly be a threat come Finals time.
The winner of Heat 4 and without doubt a real contender for this years Band Comp winner was PAPER MOON. Another 3-piece, this trio were a little bit Ryan Adams (Cardinals era) and a little bit You Am I, and despite a few technical difficulties, which were handled with absolute professionalism, they delivered a rousing set with, rollicking drums, rolling basslines and some Neil Young style lead guitar, making for one of the best sets of Band Comp ’09.
After another classic Heat, number 5 is shaping up to be huge, with 7 bands competing and all kicking off at the earlier time of 7.30. So make sure you get there early to see who the final bands will be progressing through to the Finals and to support your local music scene.
