Shipwrecked Review
By Tessa Muskett
The Inanimate Objects took to the UniBar stage first tonight. They played a varied and energetic set that brought a warm and lively atmosphere to the rain ravaged uni. With funky bass lines and melodic vocals over more classic rock techniques in the drum and guitar departments the band creates a unique sound. They are definitely an entertaining local act that should be seen.
The Dawn Collective are another local band who is familiar with the UniBar stage. People are often a bit dismissive of bands with the word ‘collective’ in their name, ranking them a level above those with ‘project’ or ‘experiment’. Such hesitation is not warranted with this band whose music is finely tuned and they have limited their members to five, much more reasonably then some other Australian indie acts currently plying the tour circuit. They play some catchy, poppier numbers such as ‘A park covered with trees’ and ‘Affirmation’ from ‘The Affirmation EP’. They are planning to release their debut album later this year.
The final act for tonight, and the real reason for the show, !-START code for custom text section-!The Shipwrecked took to the stage lastly. They were the reason we were all there. Not only were they the headlining act but it was also the launch of their debut album, whose CD cover is graced by some rather classy art. This four piece braved the weather that one might associate with causing the wrecking of ships to share their hard work with us. Their recordings are languorous and spacey with trembling guitars and drawn out sounds, which in the way they have translated it to a live show makes it come off a little weak. With more shows in support of this recording their live show will continue to grow.
