Muscles Review

Muscles isn’t your average top-chart selling DJ. Far from the usual suave image, he’s without the bling or the bevvy of beautiful women hanging from him, however it’s not a sign of ill success. His performances have stretched across nearly every major musical festival stage in Australia. His list includes Homebake, Good Vibrations, Daft Punk and supported Chemical Brothers. In unison the sold out crowd sung back the pop-techno tracks from Muscles new album ‘Guns, Babes and Lemonade.’ He stood behind his double keyboard blaring his bubblegum lyrics to a crowd of 300 at the Unibar on Friday night.

Muscles describes his music as songs you can work out to and he definitely worked the crowd as they jumped around dancing as if they should be wearing leotards and sweat bands. His music on the night not only made people break out in dance but even strip off. A group of guys sung along ‘cuz I just wanna dance with my shirt off’ as they swung their tops over their heads…. an interesting touch to the night.

The set lasted only forty minutes leaving you wondering why the triviality of all of Muscles eleven tracks are so likeable. By the end I had finally realised why girls had fallen in love with the DJs ‘geeky’ charm as they flaunted their ‘Hey Muscles/I Love You/ I wanna have your babies T-Shirts, the title of his last track on his album. The only thing I found strange was the guys singing along to the song which closed the night

His addictive songs have enveloped a huge audience who were vocally upset when he announced he would be taking a break from his ‘sweet’ career on Friday night. ‘Bustin DJs kicked off the night with supporting act The E.L.F pumping up the audience for the performance. It was Muscles second gig in six months at the UniBar and with his huge fan base I’m sure it won’t be his last.
