MIRRORSESSIONS - black Water 2007

By Amy Huynh

Mirrorsessions is a four-man band that has emerged from our hometown of Wollongong ! They're newly released album Black Water is an instrumental wonderland. Its first track Night Sky introduces us to a mystic instrumental new world, with highly emotive and passionate keyboard, electric and bass guitar effects. Its combination of enigmatic techniques brings across a hypnotic motion - bewitching listeners into a different world, immersing them into pure and rich omnipresent tones.

Adam Hendry, Nicholas Russo, Grant Malfitano and Rhett Keen are the men behind Mirrorsessions - a team effort to produce this eclectic mixture of guitar and keyboard vibes. Drive Carefully is one of the tracks that begin with an alluring electronic and guitar effect, again bringing listeners into dark depths of trickling music. The pulsing of the drums builds into a climatic explosion of instrumental and vocal combinations. Similar musical effects are adopted for their song Moonswell which begins with rebounding effects, reverberating between each ear. Moonswell transforms mid-way from a slow drawn out pace, to one of chaotic, frenzy drumming and vocal work, which then sidles into the solo beats of the bass.

The song Black Water , in which the album is attributed to, is one of gentle and lulling tones. Caressing waves can be deciphered over the strumming guitar notes which open the piece. The lyrics convey an isolated and lonesome persona - a similar ideology which each of the other songs, in their own way seem to suggest.

Mirrorsessions' Black Water is all-encompassing. It caters for the sounds that dig deep into the soul, but also allowing for the release of pent up energy through their outburst of male vocals. It's a creation of dark undertones with an atmospheric musical presence which seems to constantly reverberate within. Mirrorsessions surely knows how to create drama in this dramatic expression of human emotion.
